Russia-Bangladesh Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Moscow:

Russia-Bangladesh Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Moscow: Dr. Khalilur Rahman seeks full membership of BRICS and SCO, Lavrov responds
International Desk: On 8 June 2026, an important bilateral meeting was held in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. This is the main part of Dr. Khalilur Rahman's three-day (7-9 June) official visit, which is at the invitation of Lavrov. This is his first visit to Russia as Foreign Minister and his first major international visit after being recently elected as the President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The meeting discussed in detail a wide range of bilateral and international issues between the two countries. Both sides expressed their interest in maintaining regular political dialogue. Khalilur Rahman expressed gratitude for the contribution of the former Soviet Union in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He noted that the Soviet Union played a significant role by vetoing the pro-Pakistan resolution, quickly recognizing Bangladesh, and assisting in the demining of Chittagong port. The two countries will celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.
Trade and economic cooperation was one of the main topics of discussion. Bangladesh has sought duty-free and quota-free access to the Russian market for Bangladeshi products. Russia's support has been sought in concluding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). Bangladesh has also sought Russia's support for full membership in BRICS and SCO, to which Lavrov responded positively. The two sides thanked the Prime Minister for the fuel loading of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and requested for the early completion of the second unit.
Emphasis was placed on the early execution of various MOUs including labor recruitment, human resource agreements, readmission agreements. Assurances were received regarding the safe repatriation of Bangladeshis stranded in Russia. Russia's assistance has been sought for a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis. Discussions also focused on increasing cooperation in international forums, including the United Nations. Lavrov congratulated Khalilur Rahman on being elected UNGA President.
After the meeting, both ministers pledged to deepen and diversify bilateral relations. Khalilur Rahman invited Lavrov to visit Bangladesh.
